50th Anniversary Science & Engineering Fairs on March 8 to include DuPont Manual High School, Meyzeek Middle School and Louisville Regional Science & Engineering Fair (LRSEF)
On Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 9am to 6pm at the University of Louisville Student Activities Center, three area organizations will combine efforts to host the 50th Anniversary Science & Engineering Fairs. This event is nationally affiliated with The Society for Science and the Public, sponsor of the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). Area students will begin to move their projects into U of L on Friday, March 7 from 3:30-6:30pm.
On Saturday, March 8 between 9am and 4pm over 600 students in grades 6-12 will present their projects to approximately 350 professionally qualified volunteer judges representing the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Award ceremonies are open to the public and will be held at 1:30pm for Meyzeek Middle School and at 5pm for DuPont Manual High School and LRSEF.
The DuPont Manual Regional Science Fairs serve only students from Meyzeek Middle School and DuPont Manual High School, two Jefferson County Public Schools. The Louisville Regional Science & Engineering Fair (LRSEF) serves all other students in grades 6-12 from public, private and home schools from 13 Kentucky counties including Anderson, Boyle, Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Marion, Meade, Mercer, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Washington. For full details, see lrsef.org.
Participants compete in 17 different categories including astronomy, animal & plant sciences, electrical & mechanical engineering, chemistry as well as medicine & health, computer science and math. Many receive ribbons and certificates, while students also win cash prizes and special awards donated by area organizations and sponsors. Middle and high school winners move on to compete at the Kentucky Science & Engineering Fair on March 28 & 29 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky.
Grand Prize winners at the high school level and their teachers are awarded travel grants to present their projects at the 2014 ISEF in Los Angeles, CA on May 11-16.
